You could just darken that background a bit #8b8969 and changing the links to your existing page color, and keeping your text black. This makes your images stand out more and will give you a little more class without having to do a whole lot.

There are different color schemes that are all good. Choose one that you like. Here is a site that may help.

you've got some good advise so far and the link Joder sent you looks like an excellent tool to use. I agree that a darker colour would look better with black text and the links of a contrasting colour such as the background as previously stated.

I think that hover effects as well as other effects or buttons help links stand out more than just colour choice alone.

I would make the background a grey colour and the text links white. ^_^
