Looking for advice on heading/logo creation

Hi all,

I was considering setting up a design contest but I've decided to have a go myself first.
I just want basic advice on starting to design website headings, preferrably with pictures and large/possibly 3d text. I've tried a couple of programs with little success. What would be the best way to go about creating a professional looking heading or logo like those people make for the design contest for example. Is there a specific program to use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you looked at the Logo Creator?? I am in the middle of updating my logo, the one I am currently using is here http://www.bakerfinancial.co.uk
Admitidly this doesn't look great but it was only the 2nd I have done.
I am also in middle of updating my site (with CSS) which is not as difficult as I thought!

I would probably avoid 3d text. If usually ends up looking outdated and very amateur-ish.
There's all kinds of software available. You might try GIMP, it is free. There is also Fireworks. Then there are the even more professional pieces of software such as Illustrator and Photoshop.
Study headers that you really like and try to figure out what it is about them that makes you like them (ie, the colors, composition, style, etc). This will help you learn what to incorporate into your design.

Good luck!

Don't know how much experience you may have with photoshop, but you could download a trial version and check out some tutorials online...

if you dont have the time or patience for that, you could google "free logo templates" and see what comes up, you should find sites that allow you to customize logo's that they have created by just putting in your own text.

Hope this helps.

or you could also employ an online logo design service.
