Well, I do basic image resizing and things in The GIMP. I also use it's tools (filters and script-fu) to create logos. My band logo is an example. http://va.not-named.net/logo.jpg
I have a friend who's better at The GIMP than I am, he uses it for everything. There are also groups like The GIMP User Group which has a community and other related stuffs.
