Its not the program, its the person using the program. A newbie could fail miserably at art using a 3000$ version of maya, wheras an expert could create a masterpiece using freeware.

That isnt done in just 1 program. Its likely that this was done in a 3d program then brought to a 2d editing program like photoshop for further editing.

Agreed, there is no way that's done entirely in a single 3D program.

ok, makes sense. Back to the original question though, what's a good 3-d program to use? I've got p-shop under my belt pretty well and want to get into some 3-d affects like the ones you saw on that link... any suggestions? Corel, Maya, Cinema 4-d..? thanks

U can get that affect in all the programs excluding corel bryce which I would strongly recomend everyone not to get.

what program you get is up to you. Choose one that fits your budget.

there is no best just choose whatever suits you. I love using 3dsm for real time modeling, I love c4d for abstract trendy art, I love using maya for animation and modeling

Maya has the best results from what i've seen. (just my opinion) or maybe that new pixar renderer (where they created monsters & co / finding nemo etc in). But Max is best supported. Most tutorials, more books to choose from, more forums, more people, more support.

I like lightwave 3d. But have not used it since version 5.6 and it's come a long way since them.

I would strive to say it depends on your budget. If you've got $7000 to spend, go for Maya 6 Unlimited. If you've got about $3000 to spend, go for 3ds Max 6 (that now ships with 3ds Max 7 upgrade), etc etc.

Just my input here. I've used Maya6Unlimited, 3DSMax6, Lightwave7, Rhino2, Blender3D, and 3DSwift

My favorite by far is and always will be Maya. Although heavier on your Ram, it is faster at modeling and animating FX, IMO. If you have a tight budget or a weak computer then go with Blender3D(free).

In any case, you should know it just takes time to become skilled at anything to become good at it. I think you'll find that Maya doesn't take as long as everyone says and it's more industry accepted with higher paying jobs. In other words, it's worth the time and effort you put into it. And it'll always depend on the artist(modeler/animator) himself whether or not his work is any "better" than someone else's when comparing the software package being used. Pixar themselves have a proprietary 3D package called Marionette that you can't buy. They just care that potential applicants have imagination and artistic potential, they'll teach you the 3D package once you get the job.

good programs, maya, 3ds max, zbrush 3 which i like alot since u can also do 2.5d and 3d, depends what your going for... btw, its "ALOT MONEY"

it is 3d renders, then transfer to photoshop for positioning etc, thats how they got reflections off each object etc and lighting. but with zbrush 3, it sure is alooooooooot faster

Try using Milkshape 3D before going onto anything serious.

You might wanna check out Blender. It's an open source cross platform software with great possibilities. It has a steep learning curve though (I'm still not into it, find no time to learn)
