Does anyone have any suggestions using either Photoshop or Illustrator CS1 to make a liquid effect for the soup in this bowl? Any ideas or suggestions would much be appreciated.

Do a search for "fluid effects, web page" and it will give a decent selection.

Photoshop has a LIQUIFY filter, as well as a few other native filters that won't cost you an additional dime. You might also look up DISPLACEMENT MAPS, which could also get you the effect you want.

liquify is a great option. try that at first, if that doesn't satisfy your needs google for some special effects tutorials, I'm sure there's one out there on making soup

well, before doing the liquid effect... better enhance also the "cup" thing to blend.

I have used the liquify in Photoshop but didn't much care for the effect - thought there would be some mask I could do and create it myself but I'm going to try some of the sites a few of you suggested - really appreciate that info because I had not thought of using the web. (silly me!)

Trying to do a simple sketch of food and have it actually look like food can be difficult if you've never attempted it. But instead of filters, why not just try varying the transparency of a "soup" color, dodging or painting white in and blurring it to suggest reflection, and drawing in a couple lines rising from the "soup" up (generally accepted as a simple representation of steam)? Keep it simple.
