Hey guys im just wondering what would be better for index buttins??
should I use PNG or GIF? The reasom im asking is becuase everytime I save a GIF file with a transparent back ground using Photoshop CS2 the font goes a little 'rough' but when I save it as a PNG file it saves ok. So im wondering do all browsers read png??
by the way the font im using to is just standard ARIAL so its nothing special...

PNG — is a newer graphics format and it is some better that gif. PNG-24 have best transparent, but Internet Explorer 6 don't support it's transparent. PNG don't support animation. PNG-8 (256 colors) look like as GIF-8 but have less size

PNG is the best transparency by far over GIFs. IE6 doesn't support transparent PNG's without a bit of scripting to force it and it still won't support a repeating transparent PNGs. So it would be good for buttons, not good for backgrounds (in IE6).

As for your text, make sure you have your anti-aliasing turned on.

johar75, CircleOfLinks, For antialiasing you should find list with antialiasing variants near by Font-size list in Photoshop. If you use gif-8 or png-8, antialiasing doesn't help you if your text is placed on transparent background.

Johar75, if you're going to use PNG8 or GIF, you have to specify a MATTE color, otherwise anti-aliasing still won't look right. If you use PNG24, you won't need a matte color when you 'save for web'

Ok, well for some reason I cant actully turn on/off antialiasing its not an option, I can see it but can't do anything to it... But if I save a file with a transparency using 'save for web' PNG8 would that work in IE6 and FF and most browswers, everyone is saying PNG wont work in IE6 but how about FF1 & FF2 plus other browsers??

1 last thing regarding the 'save for web' should I have the interlaced option on or off??

IE6 is the only browser in the current crop that does NOT support PNG transparency natively. PNG8 is really no better than GIF. I'd go for PNG24, use the PNG fix to make IE6 behave and you should be good.

Leave the interlaced option OFF, you don't want that.

a link to the page would help in seeing whether it's necessary to use png 24 ( if i'm not mistaken i think we're talking about png 32 here: 24bit plus 8 bit transparency i.e. alpha transparency) or whether gif/8-bit png would suffice
