I was trying to create outlines for a font, but when I did I lost the font color. Does anyone know why?

Because it's no longer a shape, it's outlines. Stroke the outlines or fill in the outline to get the color back.

when you give create outline command font losses all characteristic of font and becomes just outlines thus no color. but you can now very easily fill or even apply gradient.
