I have a site where I am using some images of different colors to represent my main navigation.

The problem is that they look rather flat and lifeless.

I want a way to make them pop and stand out a bit.

I think a lacquered or glossy effect might work but problem is that all the tutorials I`ve seen are for using regular shaped objects as buttons, like circles, squares and rectangles.

The images I am using are totally irregular in shape.

Any suggestions please?

you could always use the line tool (If whatever software you are using has it, since you did not specify which one you use).

With the line tool you can replicate the dimensions of your buttons (manually), then fill with color, then maybe add a half covering solid white layer on top of them & make it at least 80% transparent to give that glossy effect.

That's just one one way out of hundreds. And the simplest I might add, some of the other approaches get pretty complex.

If you really want something nice, you should try a button maker...Simply put, a program that utilizes javascript to create fancy buttons that you want. There are several good one's to use. If you need help choosing, let me know.

The thing is, as he already stated, is that his buttons are quite unique & as most of use know, button makers come with default button sizes already, so that may defeat his whole purpose.

Have you tried an Inner Bevel or white Inner shadow with a soft light (or one like that)?
