I’ve read around that color theorists and designers in fashion or computer graphics have coined phrases based around what colors shouldn’t go together. A couple of them are:”Red and Green Should Not Be Seen” and “Blue and Green Should Never Be Seen without Something in Between”. I am a newbie so I’m not sure if this applies in all cases any opinions on this?

There's no hard and fast rule about what colours you can use, that's really up to your judgement and design sense. A lot of designers could come up with a red and green design that looks fantastic!

Some colours don't match the site or it's content sometimes. For instance, a mostly black look wouldn't suit this site but it might be ideal for a goth rock bands site.

Red on green is banned because of the colour blind (I believe it is the most common type), otherwise you should look at Adobe Kuler and see this thread

and the one I list there, http://www.webmaster-talk.com/graphi...or-theory.html.

Basically, use a dark background w/ light coloured text and dark coloured text on a light background. The choice is all you after that! That's the only way to choose safely, otherwise, make sure you know who your designing for. Otherwise, they might go color blind, if they aren't already.

anything color that blends with each other is always a No No. Something like black background with dark green text, that kind of hard to read
