Very carefully I would suggest.

Use colour masking and replace the ones you don't want.

Without actually seeing the image, I cant say for sure this would work perfectly, but if the background is completely solid black with no grays or anything in it, and the image youre cutting out doesnt have much black along the edge, then your magic wand tool should be able to do most of the work for you.

1. Open the image.
2. Select your magic wand tool. Looks like a diagnal stick with a star at the end of it.
3. Make sure the checkbox in the header tool bar next to "contiguous" is checked.
4. Click someplace in the black area.
5. If any parts of your image were selected that are not part of the background, use your 'remove selection - lasso tool' to unselect them (select lasso, then pick 3rd box in header tool bar showing a box with an empty box over it).
6. Hold shift+ctrl and press "I" to invert your selection.
7. Go to Select > Modify > Feather. This part depends a bit on the size of your image, but use either .5 or 1 and hit ok.
8. Go to Layer > New > New Layer via Copy (or "via Cut", doesn't really matter)
9. Hide or delete the background image, and you should be good.

Again, this is without actually seeing the image you're talking about, or really knowing ANYTHING about it. If this doesn't work for you, you'll probably need to post a thumbnail of the image you're talking about.
