Which is more convenient smaller gif or png ? Please suggest me.

I think gif would be smaller if the quality is acceptable while png would help you keep more details.

it really depends on your image and how much quality you want to keep. if you don't care about quality, you can just highly compress a JPEG/GIF file. PNG is required for perfect transparency & GIF is good if the matte matches your background.

PNG's are decent quality and preserve transparency better than gifs, but if its to be used on a website then you remember the issues within IE6.

PNG's are the future though.

I perfer png for it's quality & flexability but of course the files are larger. Gif's are ok if you really need to have a transparant background and don't mind low resolution.



b0881: What issues did IE6 have? I never noticed any and just upgraded my IE6 to IE8. But, I'm having seperation anxiety.....I don't like it or any of the other browser versions. but alas, for better security I had to enter the 21st century and make the change.

ahhh I see! thanks Chris. That's never happened to me....but it brings another question to mind. Does anyone know why - on some forum sites (not all) my GIF avatar -the same one I use here- the background shows up black?

Those forums having the background colour for the avatar container set to black would be the logical answer.
