I used to scan my sketches & then import the uploaded image into my preferred design software. Then I ended up getting a cost effective graphics tablet to practice on for $35.00... I didn't want to spend much at first, just to be sure I was going to like using a tablet & could get the hang of it.
Needless to say, many years later, I use a tablet daily & haven't ever had to scan again. The tablet, which allows you to freehand sketch right onto the canvas of the software you are using (with the vector pencil tool) just like pencil to paper. And you cut out the middle man (The scanning process).
It save me tons of time not having to scan anymore. My personal suggestion to you would be to invest into a cost effective tablet for a few bucks, you can get a new off brand like Genius G-Pen for like $35.00 or you can get a used tablet on E-bay for $10 to $20.00 (maybe cheaper). Start with that & get used to it. If you find it's a great asset to you, then maybe get a more expensive & robust model later.
Hope that helps
