Actually, I am trying to redo our site.
Currently 900px wide fixed centred.
According to statistics, in January 2010: 20% of Internet users use 1024px*768px resolution and 76% of users use a larger resolution including 37% use 1280px width.

I read somewhere that "for a 1024x768 resolution, it should be based on page width of 960px wich is a standard width,
960 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 24, 30, 32, 40, 48, 60, 64, 80, 96, 120, 160, 192, 240, 320 and 480. This makes it a highly flexible base number to work with.

I also read in another forum in a message in June 2009
"The standard is definitely making layouts of 1024 px wide (actually 1005 px when we consider the vertical scroll bar)"

So, whereas in 2010, 76% of Internet users use a minimum width of 1280px;
The questions are:
A / Must be based on 1280px? and if so how many px does it take to page width?
B / Must remain 1024px? and in this case what should be the width 1005px or 960px ? What the ideal layout?

It really depends on your site user demographic.

If they are high end users (web design, graphic design, gamers) then aim at 1280 (~1260 to allow for scroll bars).

If not, then stick with 1024 (~990 to 1005)

I am always under the assumption that since most computers that your visitors will use are at LOWEST 800x600 so that means 800 should be your width.

I know times have changed but do you really want to alienate the 800x600 users?

Pre Windows XP days maybe, hardware has moved on apace since 2002.

This is something ive always wondered about.

Most of my sites cater for 1024x768.

Anything lower will mean they have to scroll.

It used to always be 800-900 px wide. Design to the least common denominator, but the last few sites I stepped it up to 1000-1024 wide. Never any issues and let em scroll down, but never on the home page. Try not to go over 900 px on the height if you want everything on the page. Keep any info that is primary above the 900 point. Anything below that let em scroll!!

I think 960px is standard.

At my office the standards (depending on what the client wants, either 800x600 or 1024x768) we use either 770px or 990px.

For my private work I generally use 960px, 990px or 1200px depending on the specific site.

You also have to concider if you are going to use the page background as a design feature, in that case you will want the site to be slightly too narrow for the target brouser group so they can see some of the background.

960 is really nice if you want to work with grid templates in your PSD's and/or CSS.

To me 960px width is acceptable and it really seems to be standard

I think 1024x768 is standard.

Same here, and rightfully so. My statistics indicate that they make up the vast majority of my visitors.

Of course now you have to also consider mobile devices, which means you might again want to make sure your site works well on much smaller resolutions.

Definitively 960px for me. Users with 800*600px are really rare!

I’ve been thinking a lot about screen resolution lately and how the use of fluid width websites is the best way to accommodate all visitors screen resolutions. The alternative, static width websites, have to make a choice. You can optimize for 800px width, the lowest common denominator, and give up the use of several hundred pixels of width for users with larger screens. Or, you can optimize for 1024px and just make your 800px visitors horizontal scroll. Anything wider than 1024px is too much for static width sites, in my opinion.
I think the best possible scenario is to make a fluid width site that accomodates everyone. Here is what I think would be the “Perfect” fluid width layout:

• Works in all major browsers
• Shrinks to 780px
  This accomodates users with 800×600 resolution, with no horizontal scroll!
• Grows to 1260px
  This accomodates users with 1280×768 resolution and everything in between.
• This accommodates 90%+ of all internet users. You could easily make this layout grow larger, but be mindful of how line-length affects readability. Nobody wants to read a line of text 1980px long.
• Sidebars are of “equal height” to the main content
• Page content is centered for users with even higher resolutions.
