I'm surprised that you cannot see the font style in Illustrator CS2 because in CS you can. I never used CS2 or CS3 but CS4 and CS5 show the font style in both Illustrator and Photoshop (you can probably see them in Indesign too - not sure cause I don't use it) I used a font manager for years it was pretty good in that when you opened it up you could view about 30-40 font styles at a time. But eventually, I didn't need one anymore because I'm very good at organizing and remembering names.

If you go to cnet.com (download.com) and type in the search box "font managers" or "font viewers" you will get a list of different ones with descriptions and ratings from users. Some are free or have a free trial. Try some out until you find the one that suits your needs. Or just google "free font managers" for a list.

Also "what dafont.com" is an online free font identifier. You have to make a jpg of the text and paste into a field, hit submit and it will tell you the name of the font.

Personally, I don't think its necessary to have more than 3 or 400 fonts because too many fonts are so alike. Another reason is there are only so many font styles that are pleasing to the public eye and one must always keep that in mind when using text for public consumption. If you're using some obscure, esoteric font because you like it or you think it goes well with the artwork you better make sure it's easily readable and that the audience you're targeting thinks so too!

My problem is, I have so many, and I never organized anything because I wasnt heavy into typography until more recent design work. So now I am finding it too frustrating searching through all these, let alone I have like 2000 in my windows font folder because I cant decide which to take out, because that will also take a huge chunk of time.

You can try Font Expert, it provides a preview for every font you have, and also it helps you to organize your fonts, and installs them in easy way.

I started running into problems, like you, these characters have been collected over the years, ranging from the zip file separately, but still had no idea what I had, were all mixed together.

so far I got a folder where all my fonts are there. At the moment I couldn't make it more organized other than putting it all in one folder.

I'm on a mac and use Font Book.

I divide my fonts up by Serif, Sans Serif, Humanist, Blackletter and Picture.

I normally only use Helvetica or DIN though...

We do not handle 1000's of fonts.
I simply have collection of some great fonts that i searched in internet. So i use only 10 15 different fonts for almost all of my projects
