Can I do it with Illustrator?

Bryce is THE 3D World modeling tool or if you want to go Open Source Blender.

you will have to need 3D Max maya Software.. like to do...and photoshop.. for some basics.

some vector ninja could create it with illustrator, but that will take a lot of time and effort, a simple 3d software like k3d would do the job, of course the more complex package like blender and 3ds max would do it as well

use 3d Max .. Maya ... photoshop ... illustrator ... man it depends upon you that on what kinda graphics you are going to work and choose the console according to your project

3ds max = ring primitive + twist x + twist y - apply metallic material and voila.

Illustrator = mesh gradient hell.
