What software can you recommend for a quality pencil sketch design?

I'd like to convert photos to pencil sketches.

I work with Corel's Paint Shop Pro, have been for years, the majority of the designers are using Photoshop or both softwares. PSP can turn a photograph into a pencil sketch, because I have done this myself.

I had some PSP tutorials on turning a photograph into a pencil sketch, but can't seem to find them right now in my bookmarks, shall look later.

I found one tutorial on turning a photograph into a sketch, but was pretty crummy, old tutorial using a real old version of PSP. Brought up PSP Xl, had a bunch fun doing pencil sketches with photographs, under Art Media Effects there are quite a few tools to choose from with four different settings in each tool. One could spend hours playing with this, I am sure Photoshop has basically the same tools as well.

I'm setting up a website and I'd like to have some graphics done in pencil sketch as well as some pictures. I used to have Corel but was not really using it. Do you recommend PSP for pencil sketches?

I would most likely use the Live Trace feature of Illustrator to turn the photo into outlines, from their I would apply pencil strokes to the paths and take it from there really.

I always use photoshop for doing this type of work because it has a lot of option to convert your work in any style which you want.

Why??? Does the result not demonstrate that GIMP is equally capable?

What if you have no other need for Photoshop?
What if your budget does not allow for Photoshop.
What if you are not prepared to steal Photoshop.

GIMP comes with a very similar "toolkit" at a MUCH more competitive price.
