Hold down the [Ctrl] key and press [PrtScrn] to copy the screen to the clipboard.
Open your graphics tool, create a new image from the clipboard.

PS = Ctrl+N -> select clipboard as template -> Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot

GIMP -> File -> Create -> From Clipboard.

Paint -> Ctrl+N -> Ctrl+V

There are plenty of dedicated programs. Try searching your favorite search engine. They aren't hard to find. There are also extensions for Firefox and Chrome that will capture screenshots from the browser.

On the Mac we have a really good screen grab system with a ton of options.

cmd + shift + 3 = screen grab
cmd + shift + 4 = target grab (drag the area you want to capture)
cmd + shift + 4 + space = shapshot of window.

Pretty simple and sweet.
