Is there a reason why many sites have pictures named (1093475623fy68of) instead of (uncle joe) or even (uncle_joe_)?

I'm just curious about why the numerical name.

I can think of two reasons why this may be. I would expect that this comes from content management system. Often these will have an option to add a photo to a page/news item etc. and when it is uploaded it is added to a database and stored there. There is no point (and it also makes the scripting more difficult) for these to be given meaningful names, so they ususally have ID numbers or numbers related to when they were uploaded.

The second reason could be that they are digital camera photos. Usually these are a few letters followed by a photo number (which increments as you take photos).

I think the later reason for the sites i'm referrencing which were photo albums.

Yeah, the most commmon thing for pic galleries is that's how digital cameras do it. I've taken more than four thousand pics with my camera, and it just keeps going up in numbers. Sony cameras use 'DSC04532' for their serial numbers. But since there's so many of them I can't go through and rename every one of them. Way too much work.
