say for example i have a picture of my car with trees in the background. How can I use photoshop to get rid of the trees that are in the background so I have just a picture of the car and nothing else? Can someone point me in the right direction?

1)You can paint out the background.
2)Use the tool that looks like a lasso and outline the car then copy it to the clipboard.
If you paint the background out, you can make a transparient gif out of it by picking the color you used to paint the background out with to be transparient. Then you can paste it on any background you want to.

Generally, editting images the way that you are speaking about isn't a totally easy task.

Another way to get the trees out would be to zoom in, way in, and then just use the eraser. I usually use this after using the lasso, since I suck at using the lasso and keeping my hand steady. (I suppose I could just blame it on the mouse)

With only a price tag of $99.99.

Yeah. It's kinda pricy, but it you do a lot of work with photoshop and masking, then it's well worth the $99. It's one of the best (pay) photoshop plugins out there.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Magic Wand Tool. Depending on how close the color of your car is to the color of the background, you could somewhat easily take out the background. I'm not saying it's really easy, because it's gonna take some tinkering around with to get it good. Mess around with the Wand tool and the Tolerance and set it so it's just right and see what happends.

Yeah, the magic wand tool is handy too...only, if you have a lot of trees and greenery in the background, it'll take a while.

Or the lasso tool. If you click down and hold the lasso tool, you'll see the "magnetic lasso". That will (most of the time) "stick" to the edges of your shape. Only works with high-contrast edges, though, but you could still try it. Just outline your car, then go to Select >> Inverse and just delete the background.

In Photoshop 7
-------------------
* Open your Photo.
*Make a selection of your car using the Rectangular Marquee Tool.
*Go under "Select" Menu
*Choose Color Range
*Click within your image on the main color of the car to highlight most of it.
*Then Choose the (+) eyedropper tool. (This will allow you to Add to your selection).
*Drag the eyedropper across your image (your car) to select add more colors.
*Once you have a pretty decent selection;
*Slide the "Fuzzines" Slider to clean it up.
*Press OK when you're done.
*Ctrl+Shift+I to select Inverse (Your background - Trees)
*Hit Delete to get rid of your background.
If you did it correctly, and if your car wasn't the same color as the trees..... you should have only your car left! IF not, Try-Try- Again.

GOOD LUCK

Photoshop7 (no2)

Open your Photo.
Go under "Filter" Menu
select Extract
select the edge highlighter tool and highlight round the edge of the car
then select the fill tool and fill the car area in.
Hit OK

Photoshop has loads of ways to do the same thing - I use the pen tool which is a bit awkward at first but pretty cool once you have it sorted.
The Extract filter is pretty good if you have a distinct edge - so is the magnetic tool.
