I can't figure out how they ( http://www.galluphill.org ) made the background seamless with the banner image at the top. I save the background and it looks like it's just a pixel wide. Then lower down they have a completely new one pixel wide picture... is there a way to layer the background images? Is that css? I'm lost....

This is quite a common technique that has been used. By default any background image will tile, both left and down, so what the site owner has done is create an image 1 pixel high but wide enough to fill the whole screen, so that it only repeats downwards.

If you create a page with it as the background image, you will see that it has the thin light blue lines at the side, then a dark blue area (where the navigation is placed), then a large white area (for content) and some more blue (to fill the page).

To put the header image on, the header is created so that the thin verticle lines will match up exactly with the background, so when the image appears, although it is covering the background, it looks like it blends in.

Hey! It's been a very long time since I've posted. Thanks for the response. Saving the background showed me that it was a one pixel background that was tiled.. the part I didn't understand is that the color changes from the top of the page to the bottom on the right side are such that one graphic (even tiled) wouldn't cover it. There are so many color changes from top to bottom, I don't get how they used one background image to do it. Then again, I'm pretty dense.
