Well you need some sort of image editing software to create the transparent area and then save the file as a gif or png. All the popular editors will do this for you.

Not everyone has access to every piece of software....

You don't need photoshop, but you need something like it in order to manipulate images at all.

I am sure photoshop has a free trial... well, worth a visit to their site to see if they do anyway. If so download it and see if it does what you need.

Good luck!

You can go to: http://www.online-image-editor.com

1) Upload Picture
2) In "Edit" menu -> "Convert to" -> "Gif"
3) In "Edit" menu -> "Gif Only" -> "Add Transparency".
4) Click on the color in the image which u want to have transparent.

Notice: If your original image is Jpg, it might be a problem to get a nice result. Jpg's are use a lot of "almost alike" colors..

You will have problems in any program to add transparency to images..

There are a lot of programs that can create transparent images, although I still believe photoshop is the best if you want something cheaper and small, you can try the image ready version of jasc, i forgot what the name of the program is, i think it's jasc animation pro.

How about gimp? It's free, somewhat easy to use, but in the end it will do everything you need for free. Or how about inkscape? It's also free, can export to transparent png's as well.
