Hi,

I'm glad to have found this forum, because I really struggle with graphics! If someone wouldn't mind advising me, I'd really appreciate it.

Take this image, for example:

I want to have a solid colour on the left next to the bricks, and make that colour blend into the bricks, like I've seen on quite a few website logos. It's something I've never known how to do, or what to try and do it in. Even better would be to "remove" an end brick or two, and clear a space around the edge of the bricks image, and have the same solid colour blend into the bricks.

Is this fairly easy for a graphics-idiot like me?

Many thanks in advance,
James

If I'm understanding right what you want is a called a gradient. So the color on the left will start at one shade and slowly change color till it becomes the same color as the bricks where they meet. Am I understanding right?

I think most image editing software can do that. I use Photoshop which I know can create gradients, but it is a fairly expensive program. If money is an issue there are less expensive image editing programs and The Gimp is free program that can do most of the things that Photoshop can.

Removing the end brick(s) and making it look like a background color is showing through isn't too hard either. Everything you seem to want is fairly simple. It will mostly just depend on your skill level.

If you don't mind spending the money I'd go with Photoshop. It will probably be able to do most things you'll want to do when it comes to editing images. If money is an issue I'd go with The Gimp and once you've chosen the editor you should be able to find tutorials online that will show you want you want. It's mostly just a little practice to get comfortable using the software.

Fireworks should work fine for everything you want to do. Glad you found a tutorial to get you started. There are a lot more tutorials on just about anything. You may also want to pick up a book on Fireworks and work through it. I'm sure you'll learn a lot of things you didn't even realize you could do. I know I did.
