I know this may have been resolved already but here's my opinion on the matter. maybe it will help in the future?
If i am doing work for a client, i always take a deposit for my time. in fact i don't start any work before that happens. I have wasted too much time for nothing in the past. I always explaing to my clients why i ask for the deposit.
Before I get the deposit, i always talk to them about what they want, colours, look, feel, etc.
Once i have an idea, i show them. That gives them the opportunity to change direction. Once they say yes, that's the one. I go to the next step.
The biggest thing here is to communicate open and honestly. I recently had a client not pay me because he was waiting for something to happen that was beyond my control. After a LOT (at least 10) emails, I pulled part of his work down. Why? I had not heard from him at all, so I think the worst.
As a designer you want to be paid for your time. As a client you want to get what you asked for.
Being open, and comunicating can avoid a lot of stress and anger.
Being honest, and saying "sorry, i messed up" is tough. But you'd be amazed at what it accomplishes.
I know my comments might not be wanted, but hey, it's a public board
good luck guys.
