I don't know that this is something that can be taught, or if it's just something you have to have an eye for... but I have trouble, when designing logos and such, picking a font that works.

I spend hours playing with different fonts and rarely reach a point where I'm satisfied with how it looks.

So, I guess my question is... Is there something that I'm missing, or that can help me? I'm not really sure what I'm looking for in an answer. As I said, I'm not sure if this is something that is teachable.

Anyway, anything anyone has to say on the subject would be appreciated.

I have similar difficulties. From what I've seen win, thinner fonts and san serif fonts are more desireable. Even then I can go through dozens before I select one and am still not satisfied either.

I am learning some from different winning designs but without knowing the font names used you are still "estimating" to some degree.

Yea fonts are a hard one, I have a massive amount kept on the comp as sometimes I know what I want and I won't know till I see it, go searching on free fonts sites and get a good assortment read design blogs, designers articles on fonts etc, I like Myriad alot for nice clean text but I tend to use what looks good and what balances out with the design I am doing it's trial and error but do some research

it is hit and miss, although if you look at what space you have and amount of text, it narrows down the search a little for example, if you have quite a lot of text and your banner for instance is wide but not very high, a font like bank gothic is perfect

For me, a lot of times just adjusting the kerning, tracking, and/or leading is all it takes to make an "OK" font choice the right font choice
