I've got Photoshop CS 2, which might as well be my operating system. I generally know my way around in it, at least for doing photographic tasks, but this is new to me.

I'd like to be able to stack pieces of some of my photos side by side and top over bottom, like some Windows backgrounds. A friend of mine does a lot of 3D rendering and animation, and we're thinking about a project.

The basic idea is that you want to create your image, then use Filter> Other> Offset to move the image in such a way that you can see the seams. Then you can use the paintbrush or clonestamp tools to get rid of the seam.

Doing a Google Search for "Photoshop offset image tile" brought up several tutorials. Here are a couple:

Good luck!

You can also use a free PS plugin filter to help you create the tiles.
Redfield has a free Seamless Workshop filter (along with some other handy filters) http://www.redfieldplugins.com/Downloads.htm

Or, Simple Filters Quick Tile works well too:

I don't know if this will work for you, but my cheap trick is to copy/paste the section of the photo I want into a new layer, flip the layer horizontally or vertically, and then smudge/blur the two layers so that it doesn't appear to be symmetrical.
