Very subjective question happymat...everyone has a personal favorite based on their particular preferences. However, if you want to know which are the most common for different types of design:

Photoshop - made famous in print applications but also used a lot in web graphic design

Illustrator - great for (surprise) illustration (used a lot to design logos)

Fireworks - graphic program intended for use in designing web graphics - has a code export function and can be used for animated gifs etc.

InDesign - used in larger print applications such as magazine layout.

Quark - similar to InDesign but been around longer. InDesign is getting much stronger in the market.

I find Fireworks and photoshop the best. Illustrator always seems a little slow to me.

I agree with seolman

Fortunately, Never faced any problems with Illustrator. Actually we love it and use it in all our Logo Design and Vector Design Projects.

I use Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator. I like the vector programs over the raster programs as you can enlarge the images without fear of pixellation.
