What is the best software I can use for this purpose?
Is there any good free ones as well?

For designing logos four softwares are well known

Adobe Illustrator & Corel Draw - Vector based designs with nicely curves....

Adobe Photoshop & Fireworks - Some filter helps you to do designing the logo..

Illustrator is top of the line, but it's also VERY expensive. A cheaper alternative, but almost as powerful, would be XaraXtreme, it runs around $120.
