Question on JPEG transparency and HTML

Hi fellas. Got a simple question on JPEG.

I am trying to do a little logo of the website with the Jpeg format. However, I am also using a background image on my HTML page.

Here's the problem, I tried using a transparent background in Photoshop for my logo, so that the unused areas of the logo would be replaced by my background image in the html. However it didn't work, the end result is simply a white rectangle with my logo in it.

What am I missing? Can HTML and JPEG be used this way? Thanks a bunch!!!

JPEG doesn't support transparency. Try saving the image as a GIF or PNG format.

GIF is likely your best bet. IE6 and below do not support PNG transparency without some scripting to force it.

and when creating your transparent gif, dont forget to set your matte color to match the background color, otherwise you may get a nasty white border around the non-transparent part of the image.

Hi fellas, thanks for the reply.

I just tried saving the logo with gif, Photoshop CS2. I got the transparency issue figured out.

However, it seemed the graphic quality is really poor, there are jagged edges. Is there any antialiasing option with gif?

The detailed settings I used for the save are:
Palette: Web
Transparency ticked
Matte: None
Dither: Diffusion
Amount: 75%
Preserve Exact Colors ticked

You MUST specify a MATTE color, and it should be the same color as the background it will sit on. Once you do that, the jaggies will disappear
