Hi,

I'm fairly new to website authoring and have done a few sites, but i have been asked to put a search facility onto a site.

What's the best way of doing this ?

Do you have to do it yourself ?

I know there are companies how provide this, but at a price. Are there any free ones?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can't using HTML, it needs server side coding

the free ones are limited normally, or plant their adverts on the results pages

Some I have tested at one time or another are:
FreeFind
BraveNet
Picosearch
Fusionbot

And you could add a Google Adsense search box but that would be limited to the pages that Google has indexed.

There is also the Google Custom Search Engine

Google Search may work - Try this

HTML Code:
<script type="text/javascript">

// Google Internal Site Search script- By JavaScriptKit.com (http://www.javascriptkit.com)
// For this and over 400+ free scripts, visit JavaScript Kit- http://www.javascriptkit.com/
// This notice must stay intact for use

//Enter domain of site to search.
var domainroot="www.yoursitename.com"

function Gsitesearch(curobj){
curobj.q.value="site:"+domainroot+" "+curobj.qfront.value
}

</script>

<form action="http://www.google.com/search" method="get" onSubmit="Gsitesearch(this)">

<p>Search Your site with Google:<br />
<input name="q" type="hidden" />
<input name="qfront" type="text" style="width: 180px" /> <input type="submit" value="Search" /></p>

</form>
