Dear Holly,
I am self tought when it comes to computers. I was in the same boat as you a few months ago. I wanted to design a website. I went through 5 companies that had templates and they all sucked. I finally found a web hosting company called www.homestead.com
its like $23.00 a month and they give you like 3,000 template choices. What you can do is download a program called dreamweaver cs3 for free on the internet. Once you become a member of homestead, they are compatible with dreamweaver. So you use dreamweaver to edit your templates, make a custome template etc. there are step listed and homestead will help you on the phone. My point? its worked for me. A computer nerd might laugh at me for what i am doing but its perfect for the beginner. so you are not starting from scratch, you are using their award winning templates/software and tweaking them to make it look custom. The cheapest route to go and the perfect place to start. It really depends on what type of site you want to have. If you want to sell stuff, you will not find a hosting site that offers a full shopping cart, unlimited amount of products you can sell and hundreds of templates for less than 23.00 a month. believe me most companies charge 50.00 to 200.00 a month for the same service. Homestead is connected with google adwords, shop.com, yahoo search and a few others. which means, as soon as you get all your products on your site, you hit a button on your back end opertaions of your website and homestead will automaticly feed all your data/ products to yahoo, google, etc. for 23.00 a month....... shoot
its a steal. I hope I this was helpful
Sincerely,
