Detecting CSS and Javascript

Hi everyone,

I didn't really know where to post this - I hope this is the correct place.

Does anyone know how I can check if someone has javascript and css enabled in their browser? My web host supports PHP.

I want to redirect people to another page saying that it's best viewed with javascript/css enabled.

Thanks,
Dan.

If anyone has CSS disabled in their browser, then all of my sites are stuffed. Very very few people would have CSS disabled these days. Search engine bots are the only major visitors who use text-only browsers.

As for Javascript, again the vast majority of people have this enabled. Obviously not nearly as much as CSS, but I'd still say somewhere about 90%+ probably. It might or might not be worth checking visitors browsers for this - it really depends on who your visitors are.

Aside from using a text-only browser, you can't turn off CSS anyway, at least no w/o some extra toolbars or plug-ins. If your site is coded properly, then it will look good in a text only browser.

Actually now I come to think about it, I probably don't need a page as like you've both said, not many people have browsers any more that don't support css or javascript.

The best practice anytime you're using Javascript is to be mindful of how your page will function without it, with noscript protocols to follow, even if that noscript function is to tell the user that your page needs Javascript to function properly.

Yes I will add some noscript in. It doesn't look too bad with javascript off anyway, so I should be ok.

Thanks.

Simply reloading the page, rather than restarting the browser after making the changes, may be sufficient.

under some browser versions:

Netscape 4.x ::
Go to the Edit menu and select Preferences
Select "Advanced" in the left panel
To enable: make sure the "Enable JavaScript" and "Enable style sheets" check boxes are checked.
To disable: make sure the "Enable JavaScript"and "Enable style sheets" check boxes are unchecked.
Click OK and click the Reload button on the toolbar or restart the browser.

Explorer 4.x::
Go to the View menu and select Internet Options
Change to the "Security" tab
Select "Custom" and click on the "Settings..." button
To enable: make sure "Enable" is selected under "Active
scripting"
To disable: make sure "Disable" is selected under "Active
scripting"
Click the General tab and the Accessibility button on the bottom right.
Check the following boxes:
Ignore color on Web pages;
Ignore font style on Web pages;
Ignore font sizes on Web pages
Click OK to back out to the Internet Options dialogue box.
Click on the Advanced tab and scroll down to the heading Print background
colors and images and check this box (optional).
Click OK and then click the Refresh button on the toolbar or restart the browser.

Other Browsers::
If you are using another browser, please check your browsers' documentation for instructions about how to turn on JavaScript and stylesheets.
However, JavaScript and stylesheets may not work properly on these browsers.
