On a windows server you would have to set access permissions ON the server for the directory. I don't think GoDaddy gives you that option. The other possibility is to use something like .Net to manage access to the area you are restriciting.

Jeez, really go daddy don't give you the option to password protect your pages!!!

Most good Windows hosts will allow you to use a .htaccess system similar to ones used on most Apache Linux servers and it can be created easily managed using the web host control panel. (DotNetPanel in our case).

If you can't move hosts then an option would be to make your pages ASP, ASP.NET or PHP (if supported) and put the authentication inside your page code.

Why would your control panel be bad because its not a dedicated server? I would expect the opposite, your host should provide a good CP to it's customers, especially those on shared hosting who generally don't have the knowledge to deal with all that comes with a dedicated server and want something easy to use.

Try out our demo of what a good control panel should be at http://panel.servwise.com un:demo pw:demo.

As for creating an ASP, well ASP stands for Active Server Pages and to create one you simply create a files with the extension .asp and upload it to your server. Its whats is included in the file that is the complex bit and if you don't know how to program then I wouldn't even consider this as a way of securing your data as it requires at least a minimal amount of programming knowledge.

If you are just producing static HTML pages and you don't know how to program a server side language then really your only option is to move hosts if your host gives you no other way of password protecting files and folders in your web space.
