Ok, I am real new here, not very computer minded and in need of some serious help I'm hoping someone can give to me .
Our computer tech built this website "frame" so to speak, then took off and I am trying to self educate here. He made the files through vdeck and I have managed to teach myself how to make new pages through the index.php section. My problem is for the life of me I can not figure out how to ad it to our website so others can see it!!! I have tried changing it to WYSIWYG (which made it MUCH easier for me to understand) and clicking on the little chain looking icon, (i found that on a google search) but it didn't work. Any help would be soooooo greatly appreciated. I am really bad with terminology too so laymans terms would be great!!! Thank you so much in advance for any advice you can offer - my boss is on my back!

Not sure I fully understand, but I'll give it a shot here...

from what I can figure out, you've made a web page but can't figure out how to get it on the web so anyone, anywhere can look at it, correct?

In order to do that, you'll need to upload the web page to your website's domain (i.e. whatever.com). For that (unless it's a free-hosted website like on geocities or angelfire which has upload tools built in... actually, some web hosts like godaddy.com have them available too), you'll need an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program... basically that will copy the file from your computer (where only you can see it) to your domain (where anybody will be able to see it).
In order to log into the FTP client, you'll need your domain server and password, etc. which we can't help you out with, and you'll need to get from someone in your office who knows (server tech perhaps).
Also, it's worth mentioning that when you upload the .php or .html file or whatever it is, you also need to upload any other files you have on that particular page (i.e. .gif or .jpg files) or they won't show up.

If this is for a school project and you don't have any actual server registered, i'd recommend a free website service... there are a lot of them out there but the most popular seem to be geocities.com and angelfire.com

hope that helps somewhat.

I'm not sure what vDeck is. As best I can tell it might be some cross between a web server and a content management system that is based on php. It probably allows you remotely access the server and has templates for making pages. Being based on PHP it probably has some useful interactive features, such as allowing visitors to comment or sign in a members. This is a pretty big project for a complete newbie. I think your IT person did a real disservice by taking off and cutting you loose and your boss shouldn't expect you to do this on your own.

The usual starting place would be a static site using simple HTML. Lots of free hosting for these. My favorite (others will laugh out loud) is Tripod. It is perfectly fine for learning and is free. They have some useful tutorial. I like the "Web-Monkey" stuff. Don't buy any of Tripod's "premium services" as they are completely non-competitive and for what they charge for basic static hosting you can get a site with mySQL and PHP. But wait awhile before you jump in that deep. Learn some HTML, JavaScript and maybe some cut and past CGI scripting first.

I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear if you wanted to jump in with a more advanced site. Still, it can be rewarding to learn the the basic and will help you understand what is going on with a more advanced site. Maybe someone is more familiar with vDeck and can guide you through and help you get the WYSIWYG pages up and running.

Good luck, Nessy.

Stickercharge: Thanks for the reply, you are right in your assumptions I am trying to upload my pages to our domain name. It is for our business (not sure if I'm allowed to give you the site address?) Our tech made the website and if you click on say "About our Area" it takes you to a page called about our area which I can see in the index section of vdeck where I have created the other pages. I can edit the pre-existing pages which are already "uploaded" but can not upload my new ones. I am unsure what FTP is but all of my pages have been saved as .php - we must have this ftp program as other pages have been uploaded to the domain previously - the only other part i know is that there is a link on my computer to ipowernet is that the FTP. Could you throw some names at me so I can try to identify what our FTP program is, then I think I'll be able to sort it out.
This is so frustrating to have come so far and now be stuck

GBG: Yes you are right about vdeck, its php and its where i make my pages. I have done some homework on html and learned the basics through a website i came across mentioned on this site, so I am trying !!! You are right, our tech deserted us!!! All he gave me was the log in and password to vdeck!!! And my boss has very high expectations, I am good at using computer software like microsoft and word and excel, but not the complicated stuff so I've done alright I reckon, just really wish the next step would come to me!!!!! Thanks for trying to help me..

Wow, what a precarious position. It would take a normal person quite a while to learn the skills necessary to do what your boss wants you to do right now. Personally I would love to find myself in your position because web design is what I love. Of course it falls on the person who didn't know much of anything, and I mean absolutely no offense by that.

All I can say is good luck, you seem to be doing quite well for just starting. Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you get stuck, plenty of us around to help out.

FTP is basically just the method of copying the files from your computer to your website... I use WS_FTP... for a while I was using WIN FTP... there are a bunch of them out there.
