THE ALCOHOLIC'S BACK! WOOT!
Great post, and it's about time someone else said that the "Designed By..." plug is tacky. That brings the total of people that I know who have taken that stance to...3. 50% increase in numbers....WOOOOOOOO!
The only question I have pertains to 1). What happens if other people refer to you as a webmaster...or to put it it more accurately, "our indispensible genius of a webmaster"? Is that still okay?

Yes back :-)
Moved from the one coast to another
I don't bother worry about what someone else refers to me as. If your client says it, then it's fine. As for myself, I use the term Software Engineer, it matches my working title as well.
For web guys, anything along the lines of Web Developer, Consultant, or whatever goes well.
Maybe it's just me but, when I hear "webmaster" I always think of Rick Moranis in Ghostbusters. "I am the key master" lol

Good article,
Also I'd add #10:
He calls himself an SEO Expert.
And #11:
He recommends designing a website with TABLES.
Two things I'd surely avoid (if I were to recommend someone a web developer, that is).

Hey Paul, welcome back !
Good article !
Today, I actually had someone ask me what they had to pay to 'get on Google'.
A couple of months ago, I had someone else ask me to put a hit counter on their pages.
We do brand our sites, but that's just for marketing purposes, we were told we had to do it, and our names don't appear anywhere, and we're not referred to as 'webmasters'.. lol.

There is no Dana, only ZUUL!
(By the way, did anyone else think Sigourney Weaver was wicked hot when she was possessed?)
A side note on the FrontPage thing: back when I tried to hire people on a contract basis, I had a policy that I wouldn't hire anyone that used FrontPage because...well, it was FrontPage. I actually had a guy spend at least 45 minutes filling out my contact form telling me what an idiot I was because he was a happy customer of a FrontPage webmaster from (I forget the name of the company). The customer never mentioned his name or his site, and conveniently used a Yahoo! account, but he did mention the webmaster's site.
Just because I was feeling sick and twisted, I looked at the site and was greeted by a <marquee> that must have taken up half the screen on 1024x768. I could actually stand at the other end of the room (about 20 feet away) and clearly read the text on the screen.
I love "FrontPage webmasters". They're a lot like McDonald's managers; they've worked just hard enough to lord over the 5 people in the world even dumber than they are.

It says hire THAT web guy, not A web guy. You misled me. I disagree with 6 out of 9 points.
I was writing a response and realised it would be best to put it on my blog.
ADAM, you're stereotypical views of McDonald's workers has no basis; particularly for my area. A lot of students work in McDonald's, and whilst there are a couple of below average IQ workers, it's not true for the manager. To be a manager you need at least some intelligence to manage the working force and the outlet. Intelligence comes in many forms.
I like James' points

i disagree with this
He Wants a "Designed By ...." Plug on the Bottom of Every Page"
as long as it's subtle, of course the designer's name should be there - it's your business too and if you don't advertise yourself there how are people going to know who did it of they want to hire you?

They're based on the the only thing I base statements like that on...experience. When you get a cheeseburger with no cheese and the manager seems confused as to the problem, or you get attitude when you dare to ask for a burger without most of the condiments on it, or you end up double-charged because the cashier punched in your drink order twice, has to go get the manager, and then the manager stares at the register for about 2 minutes before (s)he can figure it out, you tend to develop a low opinion.
I don't care what someone's IQ is...the people that work there, at least in the Greater Toronto Area, are idiots. To be perfectly fair, they're not the only restaurant chain with this problem, which is one of the reasons I very rarely eat out anymore (usually it's an "any port in a storm" situation).

Then the managers have been badly appointed. Which is a failing of the organisation, not necessarily the individuals.
Anywho, Frontpage webmaster is as bad as any other WYSIWYG webmaster imo.

No SERIOUS designer should be using FrontPage in ANY mode. Code panel or not, the point is that it spews trash code, with MS specific garbage code, IE-specific, and makes web sites that only work properly in ONE browser.
As for 'word of mouth' - a link on a web page isn't 'word of mouth' -- it's a link. If someone wants to know about a site I designed, they can email my client and ASK, THAT is 'word of mouth'.
"Webmaster" -- anyone who throws out a 3-page site with FrontPage is now calling him/herself a 'webmaster'. That doesn't mean ANYTHING any more. It's become a catch-all term used by everybody, whether they've actually MASTERED any technologies or languages (including HTML) or not. If anybody asks me what I do.. I do not tell them I'm a 'webmaster' (or web mistress if you prefer). I'm a web DESIGNER, and a web server ADMINISTRATOR. Marketing and human resource departments have latched onto the word - that doesn't make it meaningful - it means they are CLUELESS as to what the jobs really are.

1. He Calls Himself a "Webmaster"
Any web guy that calls himself a "webmaster" probably isn't a master of anything. The term "webmaster" has become a translation for the word "amateur." The web has diversified into so many different realms that webmaster is no longer meaningful (was it ever though?)

Good definitions.. but I don't think that's exactly what the article was referring to as the use of the word.
