Hello,

On a site i have i have a couple of msn im links, so i have a add and a chat one so they click (if they have MSN) it opens window. everynow and then i get a 404 with mydomain.com/msnim:add (or chat) is this robots getting confused or just visitors who dont have Msn and is there a way to disbale the links if they dont have msn?

I think it is probably they don't have MSN. If you want to see if they have MSN you will probably need to use javascript or PHP.

You can't use either.

PHP runs on the server before and therefore has absolutely no access to anything on the client, and javascript does not have the level of access required to determine what is running/installed on a client machine.

It could be done with an ActiveX component installed on the client machine or a WSH/VBS script, both of which would limit the operation to Windows/IE only and would set off IS/AV/Anti-Spyware alerts, even Nortons might decide something was happening.

is there no way to kind of have javascript in the background try to run a link and if it is successful it works else not?

Nope,

javascript has no "hooks" into the underlying OS to determine if a service or process is running.
