Some CSS is fine in a lot of clients, it's not so much "stripped out" as just ignored because the rendering engine just isn't up to it.
You have to think in terms of HTML3.2 / HTML4.0 and CSS1 for the majority of clients. With webmail users you could be more "adventurous" as they are using a browser to render the message.
