Problem using transparant PNGs as links in IE.

Hi,
i'm creating a website for which i use transparant PNGs which should be hyperlinks to other pages (used as menu). I use transparant PNGs because i want to get a mouseover effect using css. See what i'm talking about on: http://www.kennethvenken.be/artistic.

Things work great in firefox 3 and Opera 9.5. When testing in IE 6 or 7, i have problems when clicking on the link. In IE7 nothing happens, in IE 6 it doesn't always load the page. Also, the cursor doesn't change to a hand when moving over the links..
Any help?

Just so you know, IE6 doesn't support transparency on .png at all. The best way to build mouseovers with CSS is with sprites: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/sprites

You can use transparent PNG's in IE, but you need some javascript to do it and it only works on NON-repeating images. Do a google search for IE PNG fix, you'll find several solutions.

You also need to put a proper DOCTYPE on your pages if you want anything to be even close to consistent cross-browser.

All the links worked for me in IE6, although there was some terrible delay before anything actually happened.

You need to move away from tables for layout and learn CSS for your layouts. Tables were meant for tabular DATA, not layout.

thx for all your replies.

wayfarer07 you make a good point about the css mouserollovers. i'll use the
http://wellstyled.com/css-nopreload-rollovers.html, without transparancy this time.

LadynRed, i'll put in a DOCTYPE and i'll see about changing the table to divs. (the table was generated by photoshop cs 2, so i just left it that way)

anyway, i'll just use the css image rollover.

thx

I've done this, which works, but there is always a flash of un-transparency before the JavaScipt (normally done in a .htc file) is finished processing. I tend to avoid this method because of this, but it is good to have it available in case a client likes it.

I have never seen transparent png's used so wonderfully, that is a great idea. I will look into incorporating them on my website!
