Hi,

I have done a website for a friend as a favour. Now I am being hassled around issues with viewing in different browsers. My website was done using publisher (YES, publishe) to generate the HTML and then uploaded to a hosting company called www.one.com. The website is www.walshswelshmill.co.uk.

When you view this in Firefox or Safari in corrupts. Is there a simple way of fixing the code so it works on all browers? I have tried used the Tidy application to assess the HTML but this doesn't help. I have also tried playing with DOCTYPES but this also doesnt help.

Has anybody got any advice, other than "dont get into web design unless you know what you are doing"

Thanks

There is nothing simple you are going to be able to do to that code to make it work in the standard browsers. It is using countless tags and attributes that are not in the specifications.

Look at the validation results here: http://validator.w3.org/check?verbos...hmill.co.uk%2F

500+ errors is a huge number for such a small page.

I'm afraid it is not going to work. The entire system is not like any other website; nor is it supported.

That's because you used Publisher - it generates (very bad) IE-specific code with lots of proprietary stuff that no other browser is going to support.

Publisher is a page layout program meant for PRINT - it was never meant for building web sites.

The site is not all that complicated and it could definitely be reproduced using standards-based code that will be cross-browser compatible.

I agree with LadynRed, it would probably take less time to rebuild it in Dreamweaver than to try and fix the code problems.

The best solution is to rebuild Dreamweaver is probably your best answer for a WYSIWYG Editor. if you really don''t want to rebuild you can open each page in ie and save to your computer then republish the saved pages it will filter out the xtra garbage however you may have to do some minor tweaking

Considering the knowledge level, the best bet might be to make PDF's and publish those or, find somebody who knows xhtml and have them build pages from the original documents.

I gotta agree with this...the source coding in I.E is different from FF and Safari..in I.E. you should use html, I think in FF you need to use JAVA

A browser is a browser, it just has its own interpretation of the same language. A Glaswegian and I could communicate, but we could not debate Socrates. Same with browsers. HTML is used for all, what's this about JAVA? Every website is written in HTML, even if it is written in PHP.
