Where can I find some images for a background. I would like a simple mottled color like an magnified view of high quality paper or a book cover. Something to serve as a backgound for text. My searches have been unproductive and I am about to take a picture of my carpet and see how that turns out.

That might not be a bad way to start. If you're proficient in Photoshop, you can turn that texture into all kinds of background images. Tear off the edge of a piece of vellum and scan it for the torn parchment look. Google is also your friend; look up free background images.

You could try searching google for background images. But I would suggest photoshop as well. Try search google for: photoshop background tutorial

I would suggest google image search to find images directly or google web search for websites that have backgrounds.

I know you have gotten that same answer already but it the best thing to do.
