Meta tags can be VERY useful to a wise marketing expert. When someone finds my pages on search engines and other people who may have listed my site robotically, they get the title, from the title tag, sure enough, but they also get the description from the meta tag. The description is shown as the default listing for that page. This may not seem that important with Google, who are after all going to scan inside the page and show a match more than likely from there, along with a bespoke description taken from around the area/s of the match.
Nonetheless it shouldn't be overlooked. And it's definitely bad form to just ignore them. What IS stupid is to think that meta tags and keywords can make any difference to your keyword potency, etc. But it's still good SEO - it helps provide an optimum description on the search results page etc, and even if it is redundant the majority of the time, well the ones you are excluding could happen, by luck, to be the woman buying the 2000 dollar jewellery item or something.
