I disagree. When I started learning HTML I was mega confused by all the stuff on the W3 schools site. As a complete beginner I found a book which was excellent - SAMS Teach yourself HTML and CSS in 24 hours by Dick Oliver. You can buy it from Amazon and is worth every penny.

I would say that w3 has the best HTML and CSS tutorials, but the rest of their tutorials are crap.

I agree with w3. http://www.tizag.com/htmlT/ is a slightly more plain english talk if you prefer, but there is NOTHING like the "hands-on" experience you get at w3. Don't be overwhelmed by the 40+ categories of things to learn at w3. Just focus on html then xhtml then CSS. From that point you can learn the other things like javascript, etc.

Don't bother with that. I can build a model of google on my desktop computer - i taught myself. I can make anything anywhere anytime.
And this is how i started - i jumped in and just started. I just made pages. Look it up as you make it. Learn as you go. Stop to read and you'll stay a reader forever. I bet tsiger or whatever it was started like i did, not by reading books. We ALL know w3schools, and 100s of places you can easily find good tutorials, but most of us, who know all this stuff, never ever read any of it, never have read it, never will.
You gotta just go with the flow. The first thing i learned was the paragraph tag...
<p>
give it a go
put it on a page. put words on either side. view it in a browser.
save the file as thing.html, if you like. probably make it easier.
use a text editor, not a word processor.
something like... wow it's so long since i had a windows (non)machine.
i can't remember. just find a text editor, online. the ones that come with
your machine will be rubbish. download a text editor for "coders".
that's how to start.
tutorials are for staying on the sideline
of course, since my profits can only decline in the face of increased competition, ignore me and go read the tutorials.
hmm. maybe THAT's why they're there - the tutorials are all up to keep the competition preoccupied. the ideal tutorial has infinity chapters and never ends so you never stop learning and start doing. that's an idea.

Tutorials are there for the user who can't instantly memorize content.
Go read the tutorials, check out some books, and teach your self on a trial-error basis. You can only get better as a HTML coder so why not start off the right way.

I can't instantly memorize anything. That's why tutorials are a pain. By just jumping in you can start to learn to do things - sure you'll pass through a million objects tutoring you on the way, you'll look up each thing you need to do. But you'll DO all those things. No matter how many books you read, until you do something you don't know how to do it - the language makes that sound a bit silly, but it's not accepting it that's silly.
You have to just produce html pages, which are just pages, with a bit of markup. Make your page, look up on the web what you need to do to get it to 'work' - do whatever you have to do - just get stuck in. Don't sit reading and planning and generally peripheralising yourself. There is no greater talent than to be able to dive into online production, to be sitting in an airport minutes from having to leave a country with 2 mins to handle a sudden development issue and from some random 10 year old cell phone you manage to instruct the entire system to be fixed in complex terms with nothing more than a few kilobytes on a WAP connection... you can't get that from spending your life reading books. I've been a developer for 15 years, and I've read tonnes of things but instead of reading the rubbish that is lessons, all I ever read was the stuff, like forum posts and other online living lessons and code, the stuff which I only read because I was IN THE MIDDLE of trying to do something.
Books are too vicarious and lead only to a salaried programming world. Stay out of it. Be a maverick. There's no other way to program. Otherwise you may as well be just another bureaucrat. In fact quite literally you are - tutorials are just more bureaucracy... there is no reason to stop and do all that paperwork if you have the mind to be a programmer. There is just TOO MUCH TO LEARN and if your method depends on tutorials, you'll only ever be a small fish.

"start off the right way." is a closed-minded thing to say. there is no right way. you have to see all ways. there ARE some wrong ways, though. like tutorials. bad bad way. don't start with tutorials. use them when you are clever enough to understand their language - they are REFERENCE, that's all. YOU are the teacher. or why would anyone teach you? £2.99 in paperback, to show you how to self-empower yourself on a machine? or £31.12? or a free download? or a web page which monetizes at 4p per 10,000 users? nope, matey. my skill impresses my self, it's so large now, and i started with this self-taught tutorial... i found this tag and learned to use it to turn blobs into pages...
<p>
start there and run with it... go now. come back to this forum much later, when you know specifically what you need, for adding to pages you've already made - there are unpaid geniuses in places like this - no doubt it was listening to some of them or just copy pasting things from the works of such people that i first got off the ground after <p> (which i learned thanks to Angelfire - now owned by lycos probably)

my next project for myself is to teach myself how to create console games... so you see, this is the better path. you can go from programming, to senior person doing the same programming, to being even more senior and maybe just telling people what to do, OR you can go from knowing x, to knowing k, to knowing g, to making ******n computer games, to whatever the hell you want
CONTROL your destiny - authors are paid to write, otherwise they wouldn't bother - they don't know anything you couldn't find out yourself, for free, and more exhaustively
as axl rose says, vicarious existence is a (bit of a) waste of time
sorry to triple post

You have never been in a job situation have you, 70%-90% of "making" a program is planning and designing it. There is no way you can make advanced programs without first designing it. Same said, if you don't know anything about html you will think that you "really don't need" the
Code:
<html>, <head>, or <body>
tags as they "don't" display any information.
SolvexSoft Ltd, im urging you to study some tutorials and teach your self the basics and then try to experiment, its what worked for me. I knew all of BB code but i still sat down and read "HTML Goodies" and i was then able to type up webpages the next day. I am sure that had i just started typing html, i would have been a week behind where i am now.
But, its not my call its yours have fun.
Oh, btw whitnesstheday, i just made this in 30 minutes.
PHP Code:
<?php $version = "1.0 Beta"; // Array of quotes $quoteArray[0] = "\"If you cannot explain it simply you don't understand it enough\" - Albert Einstein"; $quoteArray[1] = "\"There cannot exist an atom in such a quantum state that two electrons within have the same set of quantum numbers.\" - Pauli"; $quoteArray[2] = "\"Electrons don't and can't know where they are and where there going to be or do.\""; $quoteArray[3] = "Leonardo Da Vinci could write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time"; $quoteArray[4] = "There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with: orange, purple, and silver"; $quoteArray[5] = "Leonardo Da Vinci invented scissors. Also, it took him 10years to paint Mona Lisa's lips"; $quoteArray[6] = "By raising your legs slowly and lying on your back, you can't sink in quicksand."; $quoteArray[7] = "Only 5 out of 100 people in the world will earn a college degree."; // Fill the vars. $max = count($quoteArray) - 1; $getQuote = $_GET['quote']; // If you have a quote number if ($getQuote) { // If the quote falls outsize of the array size then fix it to be inside the array if ($getQuote < 0 or $getQuote > $max) { $quote = floor(rand(0,$max)); } // If they want all the quotes listed then process them all if ($getQuote == "all") { $n = 0; $max = count($quoteArray); while ($n < $max) { $z = $n + 1; // This is here to save memory space incase the "all" isn't called. print "$z) "; print "$quoteArray[$n]<br />"; $n = $n + 1; } } else { // Otherwise print the quote they selected. $quote = $getQuote - 1; print_quote($quoteArray,$quote); } } else { // And if no quote is picked then display a random one. $quote = floor(rand(0,$max)); print_quote($quoteArray,$quote); } // Function to display the quotes. function print_quote($quoteArray,$quote) { print "\\\\ $quoteArray[$quote] //"; } print "<!-- Random Quotes provided by ( http://decafproductions.com ), COPYRIGHT 2008 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED, Version: $version"; ?>
Go try it here, here, and here.
