Actually.. to be even pickier.. if you want to DESIGN a website, you need a graphic program like Photoshop, PaintShopPro, or GIMP

php and asp are programming languages that would let you work with the dynamic aspects of the websites.

here are the steps of web development:
- analyze what you need. find out how others did it already.
- make a rough layout on paper or some software to see how you like it.
- design using photoshop.
- develop html pages.
- if you have dynamic features use php, asp, or any other programming language of your choice.

HTML is simple languages to design websites.I think the all technologies will produce html.

I would use PHP just because there seems to be alot more resources available. Also, I think its much more easier to learn then ASP is.

I personally use PHP, certainly during the learning process it can be more forgiving than .NET/ASP when testing your coding..

Now that it has been clarified that ASP and PHP are server side languages for dynamic content, NOT web design, I would suggest using which ever one your most comfortable with...and make sure you can run them on your server. As far as web design goes, use image and HTML programs as suggested above. For HTML it's Dreamweaver for me, and Photoshop for imaging.

Both PHP and ASP can do the job, but PHP is bar far the better choice.

PHP (an inferior technology), ASP (an ancient technology) and ASP.NET (it's the 21st century, not the 12th!) are all frameworks that run your code and use it to build HTML. In terms of building an attractive web site, you could do it in any, all, or none of the above.

I think that the programming language that the back end of your site has little to do with the front end and actual design, so I think the answer would be html or css.

PHP is first and free, However for Design a web site you need not need either of them. You need graphic design program and html editor instead!!

You can design a website without PHP or ASP, but it will be a static site that is hard to update. I have used PHP and ASP and I can say I MUCH prefer PHP. What I'd really suggest is learning to make websites inside a framework like WordPress or Joomla! which will handle all the back end management, allowing you to focus on the design.

All that said, ultimately your site design will depend on the html, whether static, or generated by PHP or ASP.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) + HTML via PHP

Reasoning:

While a few splendid pics (GIMP, Etc...) can go a long way in making your site look good, the overall layout, usability, style and theme do loads more. Therefore in terms of "attractive look" I would suggest some serious delving into both CSS and it's uninvited counterpart "Cross-Browser Compatibility".

As for server-side HTML generation I choose PHP over ASP/.NET for many reasons including:

• It's not owned by the ever fattening calf.
• The overwhelming volume of online resources.
• The code just looks that much cleaner (too me).

However, ASP/.NET does have advantages in the prefab, quick development, department (translate as "ugly" & see Visual Studio). You just have to be willing to settle for the scraps they give you.

PHP and ASP are scripting languages. As mentioned by these other guys. I will add on that HTML/CSS is what you would use to "DESIGN" the website. You would use programs like photoshop/paintshop to make the "GRAPHICS".

If what you meant to ask us which scripting language is better, definitely PHP. Becasuse it's free and faster than ASP from what I have read in research papers.

ASP is a microsoft technology, and you have to pay to use the server.

There are more hosting companies that host PHP other than ASP. ALSO you can USE PHP WITH MYSQL which is a database which is ALSO FREE.

The best sites I've seen were done entirely in Flash. They're relatively easy to make. Most of the work is done inside Flash Professional using drawing tools. You then write a few lines of code in ActionScript (which is like JavaScript), and maybe link to an external PHP script, and you're done. You can also make Flash sites using a language called ColdFusion (also from Adobe), which is an easy language to learn.

PHP and ASP don't contribute much to a site's appearance. They're used to provide functionality through the server. HTML, JavaScript, and CSS run on the browser (the client). So, you can't use them to make an e-mail form work, but you can make a nice-looking site with them. As was mentioned above, you can also use a graphics program like Photoshop or ImageReady to create web pages. They can export HTML.

For local intranets you can't beat .net (asp). For the web definately php, and interestingly enough for the same reason... libraries!
.net gives you access to a huge library of activex controls, pretty much useles on the web, but a blessing on local nets. php on the other hand gives you access to the many function libraries such as GD for image manipulation. Now lets talk java! sadly the frumpiest language out there is the one we all find ourselves dealing with... javascript, it is a single threaded cripple.
