I am working on a website and they would like a PDF file to be purchase directly through their site. We have the direct merchant account set up, but I am unsure about how to make the PDF file available instantly for the customer to download. If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know.

There are probably lots around, but I used the digital download feature on CubeCart 3 (the free release version). Nice and easy to set-up too and to store the files outside of the public area. Hope this is of some use.

You could try OpenCart, which is open-source and has built-in support for digital downloadable goods. See http://forum.opencart.com for more details.

I would forget about the merchant account, use paypal. You can setup an order process that will automatically take the buyer to a download page on your site once they have paid for the item with paypal, and its free.

Paypal isn't free - they take a commission (and a big one at that) with every transaction they process. However, it is easy to use and in my (limited) experience buyers trust the Paypal logo.
