I had a chance to check my site on a different laptop the other day, and one or two elements were not aligned as they appear on my own I assume because the laptop had a much larger screen res.

The homepage http://www.mymusictheory.com showed one or two elements sitting offset rather than aligned to the left - I guess because I used <br/> to shift them down and with the wider screen there weren't enough <br/> to push them down far enough.

I haven't got access to the other laptop so I can't check or fiddle about - I hope you get what I'm trying to say!

Is there a better way to push the elements down regardless of screen res? I was wondering if float:none will work, and does it work as a table attribute?

It's really hard not being able to see the effects on a larger browser (I have 1280x800) - anywhere where I can check browser shots quickly with a direct input of code?

Thanks!

Using breaks as a positioning element is not a good technique (as you have found)

but it sounds like it is a float/clear issue, lots of thread on clearing floats.

I would suggest that your site is better suited to a fixed width layout rather than a fluid one.

Thanks SiberForum - I might take you up on that if I can actually find a way round this!

Chris I have searched the threads and found various ways to clear:both, but none of them work because they just push all the content below the end of the left nav. Is this what you mean by using a fixed layout? Wouldn't I also need to use float to get the two column layout even with a fixed layout? ArrgghH!

There are ways without using a floated element

but for a two column fixed width only one column will need to "float" should it be necessary.

I have a 20 wide screen monitor and all looks fine to me at your site, but you may have already corrected your code.

Here is a link to an app that will let you test your site on different screen resolutions :

Thanks for taking the trouble! I haven't exactly "corrected" the code, I took the coward's way out and shoved in a couple more <br/> to be on the safe side. (Don't tell Chris ) Thanks for the link too - I will have a look
