Hi guys,

I am trying to create a mailing list for my website.

I would greatly appreciate any html code that allows my visitors to opt into a newsletter, and their email details get emailed to me.

and/or

Someone to explain to me the basics of MySQL and how I could store customers email addresses on my webhosts servers as I have no idea how this works. (a link to a free tutorial would be great!)

Many thanks ,

Matthew

Actually, I've already built one similar to what you want. But, all the information is stored in a .txt file. It contains a little php, but then, a little php won't do anyone harm, will it?

Tell me if it works!

If you are new to html and php it may be easier for you to use a web service to get your mailing list off the ground. I know that a lot of professional sites use aweber.com to get there mailing lists, I am pretty sure it is free to use too.

Ultimately you're not going to be able to do this with JUST html. You'll need PHP, RoR, Python, or some other scripting language to actually take the information and send it via email. A pre built solution will probably make things easiest. mailman is a really simple (and as far as I know free) tool for managing mailing lists. I'm not sure you could really run it on a shared host or anything though. You'd probably need a dedicated server.

You might also want to look into campaignmonitor.com - easy to use and easy to create your own templates.

Thanks for your help guys,

As I was switching web hosts I came across a newsletter tool on 1and1.com and it seems to do the trick. It has templates that are easy to set up.

Thanks again.

Matthew
