I joined a beginners web design class at my university for easy marks and this is on the slide in the 4th week of class

Quote:
Coding by Hand
Only if you absolutely insist

Best done either for small numbers of pages or for tweaking code generated by other programs

Requires in-depth knowledge of tags and codes

No special software tools needed
Just thought some of you might enjoy that.

I assume you require Dreamweaver to even sign up for this mind-suffocation and are being taught that Firefox and the lot are evil and you should never try to make websites to fit those?

Not all suit-wearers are bad. Jarvis Cocker wears a suit, I wear a suit (I hope I'm not bad), Dr Who often wears a suit.

Look on the bright side. This is how they educate our competition. WE keep the money, in other words.

Here is my version of the slide:
Quote:
Coding with WYSIWYG
Only if you absolutely insist

Worst done no matter what or for totally ruining code generated by other programs

Requires in-depth knowledge of EVERY SINGLE ONE OF IE'S BUGS

A not-so-special tool, at it's best

what do I need knowledge of tags and codes for, it's all listed in the internet. I guess you have to kind of know what they mean. Anyway, a class like that like that helped me learn what to search for.

hmmm he is having us validate our sites with http://www.cynthiasays.com in addition to the XHTML and CSS validators.

Do you guys use that?

Plus can a WYSIWYG editor really pass a validation on Strict like he asked? That seems like a tall order. But I guess if the pages are simple enough it might not be a big deal.

think of it like this adinida - you have a site with very basic coding, and as a result only one way exists for you to monetize it - adsense; meanwhile any site owner with development talent can build a model which seamlessly incorporates affiliate adverts at a much higher rate of return. so we make more money by knowing how to make proper pages. if you paid someone to design your page, and someone else to place the ad codes, and someone else to do the accounts, even though you'd still get paid, it'd never be as much as me, since i do all those jobs myself!

truly, is cynthia a friend of his? or maybe his own page? whoever owns it is going to see this thread!

I think its just a site that validates your code so I dont think it has anything to do with him.

Even if it is it doesnt matter. Hes a compsci guy so I am sure he codes himself this is probably just what the university makes him teach, kind of ridiculous I think.

And THAT is why I would never, ever recommend someone to go to college or take some class or anything if they want to learn web design. Blech...

"Cynthia Says" is an accessibility validator/checker (508 standards in the US) NOT a HTML validator.
There was also the free "Bobby" validator at Watchfire, but since Watchfire was bought by IBM the free online validator is no longer available.

No I used to use the Bobby one as and when needed. Now I tend to make use of the WAI Validator at http://www.smartlabsoftware.com/wai-validator.htm
