What is better to use? "div" or "tables"

Hi all,
Im new here and I would like to know some doubts that I have. I observer that some websites are using "div" and other "tables".
What is the difference between those 2? What do I get or what results, if I use "div" or "tables" in my website.
To be honest, before I was using "tables" in my header and footer templates, and my site had a score of 95% SEO in whois.domaintools.com
But after I switched all things to "div", now my score had lowered to 85%, is that posible and could had been because of the changing code?
Some friends told me that using "div" is better for a fastest speed of the website...
I would like to hear some professional opinions.
Thanks alot to all,
All the best,
Xexiu

Nope!
Tables are for tabular data.

reason why some prefer divs than table is because divs are faster and easier to load than table.. but it personally think divs are a bit harder to form than tables.. if im having a hard time doing it in divs, i switch it to tables..

So then it has nothing to do with my SEO score that had lowered from 95% to 85%?.
Cause all this happened, just after changing the codes to "div". Hmmm, I should had left them like tables, sometimes I dont remember the "id" of each div, and need to search for it haha. Its kinda anoying searching trought all CSS codes for a id

Wow nice comic article. Its really better and easy to read, you sure helped me a lot LadynRed. Thanks .
Do so, I think that using DIV and CSS can be a bit more complicated, than using tables. Yes, I know that CSS and tables have more funtions. As you can add CSS on your hosting folder and make a rel link to it, to save bandwidth and space, but once you begin to work with CSS and div, you need to edit all your work that u had done. In my case I only edited the header and footer templates, and yes... I noticed a faster load, but a really hard work with all id's and classes, cause everytime I want to search for an image, or logo, I need to go to my admin panel and search for the CSS. When I was working with tables, I only need to make right click and "show image" to see the url path. Dunno if I explain myself.
In my conclusion: since I switched to div, my page loads more faster, but dunno why I have problems with SEO. As I said before, now my site is on 85% score, and before it was to 95%. Maybe Im wrong and it isnt because I switched to div's, and the problem is other. That is a thing I would like to know... and dunno where :S

Just ignore the stupid "SEO score" it is TOTALLY meaningless. Delete the URI of that "tool" and NEVER EVER use it again.

That would be an excellent start as the only web tool that matters is the stats or lack thereof in your control panel.
Once you quit thinking tables and start thinking divs the process is really much easier. You won't have to do stupid stuff like open a footer file to edit the third column of the main content area.
I am still learning but I am 100% sold on the concept.

Thank you guys for are the help. I got a last question (maybe Ill open a thread somewhere, in other section cause I dont know if this is the right one). The question is for colbyt. I saw your site of hosting, and I really liked that menu on the left (support Center, Web hosting, etc.) Can you show me, or make a tutorial, share...etc.
How can I make one, similar for my website menu? With submenus and other submenus into the submenus. Don't know if you get me.
Should I open another thread, respecting to the above question?
All the best,
Xexiu

Just in case you are trying to trap me since that is a table based site. , it isn't my site. It is a host I use and refer to people to. From reviewing the source code I would say it is js based. You can do it that way or you can do the same thing with CSS which will work even if the vistors choose not to allow JS.
I had one like that on a site once. It was free to develop and use. Over-night I will look up one of my old sites and post the URL for you. They had an online creator and you just download and save the source.

Wow. I will really thank you, if you can find that old site . Im looking for a nice CSS menu, cause I allready used js menu, but some users complain about bad functions with Internet Explorer, so I had to remove it .
I will wait paciently for your answer

Found it for you. You build it online which is a fairly slow process and the download it. Mine was a horizontal but I recall they had a vertical option. Once you have it you can edit, add or subtract items using notepad2 if you are careful and follow the syntaz.

Have fun.

Divs, with experience, are a lot easier to work with, and in addition you can add more style to them through CSS. You're overall code is much cleaner with the proper use of divs.

I think tables is for those who don’t get the reference, div is a Web-coding tag used to group elements in an HTML document — symbolic, the club organizers say, of the mix of student Web designers and developers who will band together to perfect and market their skills to the local business community.
