Hi.

Our website: www.freeshares.info doesn't display properly on other computing systems.

For eg:

I have windows vista on a laptop, when I open the above site in firefox & internet explorer, it doesn't completely display in either browser.

It only shows itself in 2/3's of both browsers.

But displays fine on my pc in both FF & IE.

If you take a look you'll see what I mean.

Can someone please tell me how to fix it?

Thanx in advance,

TK

Agree with Chris 100%!
Typical Dreamweaver nasty code. You're also using horrid deprecated <font> tags and align attributes.

I'll make one other suggestion:

What does that have to do with the positioning?

Please advise.

The brief answer is that they are saying your page is not a quick fix.

They have looked at the code and can tell that it was created in Dreamweaver in design mode only, which uses deprecated (that is, outdated) HTML code and absolute positioning in the CSS everywhere. That causes pages designed in it that way to break frequently, especially in IE.

If you need this fixed quickly, and your coding experience is limited, my suggestion is to hire a coder familiar with current ways of coding. If it is not, and you're up to the task of learning how to construct the page properly, follow the link LnR posted, learn current coding yourself so that you can utilize Dreamweaver without relying upon the garbage code it spits out, ie in code or split mode.

Should you choose that route, we'll be happy to answer your questions along the way. Either way, I wish you luck in getting this done.

You mean I can still use DW void of the rubbish code?

Thanx in advance,

Yes, if you learn to actually CODE yourself, DW is a very good TOOL. On it's own, in design mode, it creates nightmare code.

Online tutorial -- www.w3schools.com

There isn't going to be a step-by-step tutorial to fix your particular problem, however, you might want to read up on how to use floats:

If you are interested just learn from the basics and build your way up, CSS and programming is a huge subject and so no single tutorial will fix it.

Read through the W3C site, has many individual tutorials for you to work through.

Obviously there is a problem with the code now and so you may want to hire someone who can help you with that now while you learn proper coding for future updates of the site etc.

I use DW for the site management aspect. Rather have a separate FTP system that can synchronise the in-house dev server and the on-line production server.

Simply because you made a sweeping statement rather than qualifying it as...

"Never use the dreamweaver design mode"

There are many people who read the forums and will read your statement as absolute fact. It may seem pedantic to you, but forums exist to help educate others, and a major part of that education is making sure that the information is correct and is NOT open to interpretation.

Well, I'm glad you mentioned that.. Because I hate to say this... You do the same as I just did! I have read tons of threads and replys from you where what you say is a statement.

example:

"Never use meta keywords" - wow thats education. But maybe we should stop our little "fight", because it's not the threads purpose. Thanks

I'm still quite at the beginning, but I had to do the basic decision to either learn Dreamweaver (which includes spending money to buy it)...

...or learn to code myself.

I decided to go with the coding, and it's more fun this way. (even when some things you design at first simply explode).

Of course, now I got it, that you cannot design without Javascript. That's next...

Those tutorials are not very good. They just list the facts, but no impetus in direction of actually creating a thorough understanding.

I'd recommend getting a good book. I recommend Sitepoint or Apress books.
