<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7" />

Use this to let the IE8 use compatible model.

This is not the answer, and is definitely not something you should ever be doing to a brand-new site.

I've never experienced any difficulty linking any stylesheet to IE8, so there is probably some simple answer as to why you are having trouble, such as an unclosed tag inside of your <head>. Maybe there is a conditional comment that is malformed. We won't be able to tell without seeing the site source.

Run an HTML validation on the page, to see if it kicks up anything funny.

I have to agree. Now that IE8 is officially released, you probably do not want to be using the compatibility mode. You also need to read the article in the stickies about IE8.

I see what you mean, if it doesn't validate it won't render properly?

It depends. Browsers will often try to figure out what you meant, if your code is malformed, but if it does validate, chances are it will render the same way in the proper browsers. Validation is a good way to catch common mistakes which may cause results which are difficult to predict. After all, there isn't a standard written for what a browser is supposed to do with bad code.

actually, I've just made sure everything validates and it STILL won't render, what is it about ie8 that is so different?

Will you give us a link so that we may see the page itself?

actually forget that, I took the @charset "utf-8"; out of the beginning of my stylesheets and it worked, but I have sites online that use that and they work, does being offline make a difference?
