Website testing tools?

Does anyone know of a good program which continually tests your website with different browsers such as IE, Safari, and Firefox and notifies you when either the site is unreachable or lets say a PhP or ColdFusion error appears.

I have a few sites which I test daily, but if I could find a program that does this for me and sends me a email is something goes wrong it would make my job 10x easier. I've searched around Google and have found several program that ping your webserver, sometimes the webserver is working and IIS or Apache can be shutdown. Does anyone know of a good program for tracking this.

Thank for your help,

I would recommend Selenium.
It's open source, free and works with practically every browser on most OS's.

We use it at work.

Caveat, you'll need to put together you own means of sending email. Unless you drive it with Maven and Continuum or something similar.

If you have lots of free time, and a great amount of attention to detail, then sure, manual testing is fine.

If you are doing it for the fun of it, I could see doing it the automated way, but if you doing for work purposes, you're better off doing it manually, but you should know what's better for you.

At work we use both.

We have several thousand automated tests. It'd take a team of humans weeks to perform them. It'd also be mind numbingly boring. The machine performs them in about 2 hours.

This frees the QA team to look for new bugs and poke around.
Whenever a new bug is found, an automated test is created for it. Helps eliminate issue of passing reproduction steps to developers and ensures that the bug doesn't reappear.

Cross browser testing usually takes forever.

If anyone is interested in beta test for an app that will do it in less than 4 minutes, you are welcome to send me a private message.

I am not sharing more info because i don't know the rules of the forum and it might sound like advertisement.

We don't allow blatant advertising in the general forums but we do allow some leeway where sig links are concerned
